US Airways Flight Attendants Do Not Ratify Tentative Agreement

Flight attendants at US Airways represented by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), have voted to not ratify a proposed five-year collective bargaining agreement. US Airways and AFA reached a tentative agreement on January 27, 2012 that would cover the airline's 6,700 flight attendants who are based in its three hub cities of Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia and Phoenix and its Washington, D.C. focus city.

As part of its long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, the Tampa Port Authority announced the beginning of the 2012 annual migratory bird nesting season in Tampa Bay. The official bird nesting season is April 1 through August 31, each year. The port authority works very closely with its key partner, Audubon Florida, as well as state and federal regulatory conservation agencies in Florida, to provide protection annually for nesting birds and their young in the Hillsborough Bay area. The port authority owns and operates two dredge disposal islands in Hillsborough Bay—islands 2D and 3D. Both islands and the Richard T. Paul Alafia Bank Bird Sanctuary, in Hillsborough Bay, have been recognized by BirdLife International for their global significance and importance as bird-nesting areas. Protection of the nesting birds that use these islands has evolved into a shared project.

Aeroflot is preparing for the summer

Aeroflot has developed a new schedule in which Guangzhou and Krakow had appeared, Brussels, Budapest and Los Angeles had increased in number.

Aeroflot plans to launch regular flights to new international destinations in the summer season (until October 27, 2012). This year the company plans to fly to Guangzhou (China) three times per week, to Krakow (Poland) four times per week and to make seven flights per week to Stuttgart (Germany), Vilnius (Lithuania), Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa and Kharkiv (Ukraine).

STR reports US hotel results for week ending 24 March

The U.S. hotel industry experienced increases in all three key performance metrics during the week of 18-24 March 2012, according to data from STR. In year-over-year comparisons for the week, occupancy was up 1.8 percent to 63.6 percent, average daily rate increased 3.8 percent to US$106.51 and revenue per available room was up 5.7 percent to US$67.77.

Among the Top 25 Markets, Nashville, Tennessee, reported the largest occupancy increase, up 18.2 percent to 73.7 percent, followed by Houston, Texas, with an 18.0-percent increase to 74.0 percent. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-New Jersey, fell 9.0 percent in occupancy to 65.4 percent, posting the largest decrease in that metric, followed by Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota-Wisconsin, with a 7.1-percent decrease to 60.4 percent.

Network Rail: All Change At London Bridge

Network Rail’s proposal for a major redevelopment of London Bridge station has been awarded formal planning consent. 

The decision means that from 2018 over 90m passengers a year - a 35m increase - will be able to travel through a brand new, state-of-the-art railway station. The plans are part of the second stage of the Thameslink programme to unlock much needed capacity on London’s rail network, and allow more services to travel to and through the capital.

Bombardier Named Systems Supplier of the Year

Bombardier Transportation has received the prestigious award for System Supplier of the Year at the 2012 Revista Ferroviaria Awards, held in São Paulo, Brazil. Jurandir Fernandes, São Paulo Secretary of State for Transport, presented the accolade to Bombardier Transportation Brazil executives André Guyvarch, President, André Richez, Head of Rail Control Solutions and Eduardo Saccaro, Director Systems.

Bombardier has won the award for its game changing INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, delivered with the CITYFLO 650 automatic train control solution. Cost effective to introduce without requiring major infrastructure or civil works, it offers transport capacity up to 48,000 passengers per hour per direction. In consortium with the Brazilian civil contractors Queiroz Galvão and OAS, Bombardier will design, supply and install a 24 km, 17 station INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, with the CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) technology that enables short 75 second headways between trains.

Air China and Cathay Pacific establish airport ground handling joint venture in Shanghai

Shanghai Airport Authority, Shanghai International Airport Co., Ltd., Air China Limited and Cathay Pacific Airways announced the establishment of a joint venture company in Shanghai for the provision of airport ground handling services at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

The joint venture company – Shanghai International Airport Services Co., Limited – will be 41% owned by Shanghai International Airport Co., Ltd and 10% by Shanghai Airport Authority which is the majority shareholder of Shanghai International Airport Co., Ltd. Air China and Cathay Pacific’s wholly owned subsidiary Hong Kong Airport Services Limited (“HAS”) will hold 24% and 25% of the joint venture company respectively.

Google Welcomes the World to Thailand with Brand New Street View Imagery

Google, together with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, announced that Street View imagery of three major areas in Thailand is now live on Google Maps. This imagery allows users in Thailand and around the world to view and navigate 360-degree street-level imagery of greater Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Thailand is the 35th country where Street View imagery is available.
 
In areas where Street View is available, you can access street-level imagery by zooming into the lowest level on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange "Pegman" icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a blue highlighted street.
 
Locals can use the 360˚ panoramas to check out a restaurant before arriving, figure out driving directions, arrange meeting points, or get to know their own town better. Thai businesses can also benefit from Street View technology by embedding Google Maps directly into their site. Hotels, for example, can easily show what their guests what the building looks like on the street and also a sense of the surrounding neighborhood.

Bombardier Wins Order to Supply TWINDEXX Vario Double-deck Multiple Unit Trains

Bombardier Transportation will deliver 16 BOMBARDIER TWINDEXX Vario multiple units to Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) for operation on the Kiel-Hamburg and Flensburg-Hamburg railway lines. DB AG was awarded a contract to operate services on these regional lines in a Europe-wide tender process. The order is valued at approximately 160 million euro ($208 million US) and is part of a framework agreement between Bombardier and DB AG from December 2008. DB AG has already ordered 135 of the variable double-deck coaches for intercity transport as well as 18 intermediate coaches and three double-deck power cars for regional services.

Tower Bridge Launches New Animated Attraction on 1st May

Tower Bridge proudly invites visitors to an audience with Her Majesty Queen Victoria, along with her faithful subjects Sir John Wolfe-Barry, the Victorian civil engineer who designed Tower Bridge, and its architect Sir Horace Jones, to experience the story of the bridge in an exciting new show that opens at the world-famous London landmark this spring.

Using the latest techniques in visual effects, this immersive experience features top stars from stage and screen, including Cally Lawrence (Coronation Street, Law & Order UK) as Queen Victoria, Sebastian Abineri (The Bill, Kingdom) as Horace Jones and Robert Benfield (Sherlock, Emmerdale) as Sir John Wolfe-Barry, to tell the fascinating story of Tower Bridge in an entertaining and light-hearted way that will appeal to all ages.

Ovation Managing Directors earn DMCP Accreditation from ADME

Managing Directors of Ovation Global DMC, Padraic Gilligan and Patrick Delaney, have earned their Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP) accreditation from the Association of Destination Management Executives (ADME). Both were named in the February 2012 class list unveiled by the association this week.
 
The DMCP certification is awarded to candidates who have demonstrated a professional level of knowledge, involvement and accountability within the destination management industry.
